NC sheriff warns of scammer demanding payment for missed court date, jury duty

MCDOWELL COUNTY, N.C. (FOX Carolina) – McDowell County Sheriff Ricky Buchanan is warning residents of a scammer posing as a sheriff’s office employee to steal money.

In a social media video, Sheriff Buchanan said several reports were sent in of a person claiming to be Sergeant Donnie Massey or a supervisor. The scammer is telling victims that they’ve missed jury duty in McDowell County or some kind of court date in Asheville at the federal building.

According to Sheriff Buchanan, the scammer is using high-pressure sales tactics to get victims to go to their bank, retrieve money and then go put that money on a card from a retail establishment. The victim is then asked ot give the scammer the access code on the back of the card…
