Opinion: Affordability may lose in planned Haw Creek development

It sounds almost dreamy.

The new developer plans to preserve three older homes on site, as well as green space and wetlands. If and when they build, they’ll create a “wellness-focused community” with “walking connections” and community gardens. Nature will take precedence in whatever they do build, which will involve way fewer homes than the 84 that the old developer planned.

So, what could be wrong in this planned Haw Creek paradise? Well, fewer homes means more expensive homes, as in very likely over $1 million and possibly approaching $2 million.

That’s not exactly the “missing middle housing” that Asheville so desperately needs, and what the former development company, L.B. Jackson Co., planned to build. Sure, Jackson was talking about homes in the upper $400,000 to $500,000-plus, but sadly, that is roughly middle-income housing these days for two working people…
