APD officer cleared of charges in fatal shooting

A Buncombe County prosecutor has cleared an Asheville police officer who fatally shot a man outside Shakey’s Bar in July, determining the officer’s use of deadly force was justified and no criminal charges should be filed.

District Attorney Todd Williams made the determination after reviewing body-worn camera footage, video from the business and evidence provided by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation.

The July 15 shooting began shortly after 1 a.m., when Asheville police responded to Shakey’s Bar at 38 N. French Broad Ave. after reports of an armed person becoming aggressive with bar staff.
