Buncombe County sees thousands of property tax appeals amid sharp value surge

BUNCOMBE COUNTY, N.C. (WLOS) — More than 11,000 Buncombe County property owners have filed appeals over their new assessments, as many react to what county leaders describe as the largest increase in values in more than a decade.

Buncombe County Tax Assessor Eric Cregger said the spike in values is tied to the gap between the county’s last reappraisal in 2021 and today’s housing market.

“The value that you paid on last year, your tax bill from last year, that value was a five-year-old value,” Cregger said. “So that’s why you would see that jump from the 2021 value to today.”…
