Weaverville footbridge demolished overnight

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — The Coleman footbridge, also known as the Weaverville footbridge, over Merrimon Avenue was demolished overnight Thursday into Friday, May 8, 2026.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) planned to remove the bridge in early March, but intense community opposition prompted a pause in demolition plans.

The bridge was built in 1909 by the Coleman family to provide safe passage over trolley tracks that ran between Asheville and Weaverville.

Weaverville Town Council considered taking ownership of the footbridge but ultimately voted against it in late April, citing a significant financial burden to preserve it…
