Freedom bells rang in Galveston Bay, Texas, on June 19, 1865, two years after Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing more than 250,000 enslaved people. Now, five years after its official declaration as a federal holiday, Atlanta is celebrating with family-friendly community gatherings, live music, and Black business expos.
