A 42-year-old man was shot and killed inside Historic Old Fourth Ward Park in northeast Atlanta, and police have detained someone for questioning as detectives try to piece together what happened near the park’s playground. Officers responded to a call about gunshots at the park and found the man suffering from a gunshot wound; he was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving efforts failed.
According to WSB-TV, the Atlanta Police Department blocked off the playground area with crime scene tape as officers investigated the shooting. Channel 2’s Bryan Mims spoke with Lieutenant Christapher Butler, who said police responded to a call about gunshots at the park. The station reports that police have detained somebody involved in the incident for questioning, though no charges have been announced.
A Landmark Greenspace Turned Crime Scene
Historic Old Fourth Ward Park is a 17-acre public greenspace at 680 Dallas Street NE along the Atlanta BeltLine Eastside Trail, built around a two-acre stormwater retention basin that helps control flooding in the surrounding neighborhood, according to an Official City of Atlanta Press Release. The site was a brownfield with abandoned warehouses and parking lots; Phase I opened in 2011, and Phase II was completed in 2012. The adjacent Historic Fourth Ward Skatepark opened in 2011 with partial funding from the Tony Hawk Foundation and sits along the same BeltLine corridor.
The area around the park has seen rapid commercial growth in recent years given its proximity to Ponce City Market. In June 2026, Atlanta BeltLine Inc. acquired a 60,000-square-foot creative office building at 746 Willoughby Way NE next to the park for $16.5 million to help preserve commercial affordability, as reported by Bisnow.
Zone 6 Patrol Area Has Seen Other Recent Violence
The park falls within the Atlanta Police Department’s Zone 6 precinct, headquartered at 2025 Hosea L. Williams Drive SE and responsible for patrolling more than 20 east Atlanta neighborhoods including Sweet Auburn, Inman Park and Kirkwood, according to the Virginia Highland Security Patrol. Old Fourth Ward has recorded several violent incidents over the past year.
