Downtown Augusta homicide prompts discussion on homelessness and public safety

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) — The arrests of two teenagers in connection with a deadly assault in downtown Augusta are prompting a broader conversation about homelessness, public safety and the resources available for people living on the streets.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office says 17-year-old Lamar Witt and 19-year-old Keshaun Walters have been charged with murder following the death of Nathan Lewis, whose body was found early Thursday morning in the 600 block of Broad Street.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to the area after a report of a broken window and discovered Lewis deceased. Investigators later released a BOLO asking for the public’s help identifying two people seen in connection with the case.
