Investigators say a 90-year-old woman was manipulated into buying hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold before deputies replaced one shipment with rocks and dirt and arrested the man who came to collect it.
COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – A man arrested during a Columbia County investigation involving a 90-year-old woman and hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold has been sentenced to 14 years in federal prison.
Javed Ashiq was arrested in 2024 after investigators with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office say he came to the woman’s home to collect a package he believed contained about $241,000 worth of gold bullion.
