Storm forming in gulf could bring winds to Augusta, say experts, but sunny skies expected

Tropical Storm Milton formed in the Gulf of Mexico on Saturday and is expected to strengthen quickly into a hurricane as it moves across warm waters before likely making landfall on the Florida peninsula Wednesday morning.

The storm is then expected to move over Florida and continue tracking northeast into the Atlantic.

The Augusta area could experience windy conditions Wednesday and Thursday, but sunny skies are forecast for both days with high temperatures in the 70s.

On the coast, strong rip currents are possible in Georgia as the storm moves into the Atlantic, said Emily McGraw, a meteorologist in the Charleston office of the National Weather Service .

The Savannah area likely will feel some impacts beginning Wednesday and carrying over into Thursday, but they are not expected to be severe, said McGraw.

“There certainly will be some gusty winds, depending how close it gets there,” McGraw said Saturday. “We’re just not sure of the strength of the winds at this point.”

Milton is forecast to become hurricane by early Monday , according to the National Hurricane Center.
