COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WJBF) – Investigators in Columbia County are warning residents about fraud and scams that are designed to look real.William Bonsack, an investigator with the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, says they are seeing more fraud cases in the area, including scams through phone calls, text messages and emails.“A lot of phising scams where people receive emails from unknown indidivuals, text messages, and situations where they’re told there’s a problem with their account or possible fraud,” Bonsack said.Bonsack says scammers often try to get victims to share personal or financial information.“If you don’t know who you’re talking to, never share a credit card number, debit card number, account numbers, or your social security number,” Bonsack said. “Just don’t do it. Those are yours and yours only.”In one case, Bonsack says a victim was told to buy gold and that an undercover officer would pick it up to keep it safe.“She lost about half a million dollars the first time,” Bonsack said. “The second time, we got involved and replace the gold with a box of dirt and rocks.
