DENVER (KDVR) — Despite Denver’s unusually warm winter, an incoming snowstorm is expected to leave several inches in the metro, possibly making it among the largest May snowstorms in the city’s history.
This winter was one of the warmest and driest in history. Usually, snow stops in Denver around April 28, according to National Weather Service records. However, some last-minute snow is expected on Tuesday and Wednesday before summer hits Denver.
Timing, totals, what to expect for early May snowstorm
Several areas across Colorado are expected to see 1 to 2 feet of snow, and Denver could see as much as half a foot of snow. This is a huge change, since there wasn’t much snow over the winter.
If Denver sees half a foot of snow, it will be among the largest snowstorms of the year in the city. This could make it not only close to the largest snowstorm this season but also among the largest May snowstorms in history.
Largest May snowstorms in Denver’s history
Here are the largest May snowstorms in Denver history, according to NWS:
- May 25-26, 1950: 10.7 inches
- May 15-16, 1957: 8.8 inches
- May 17, 1983: 7.1 inches
- May 29, 1975: 5.6 inches
- May 20-21, 1931: 4.6 inches
- May 18-20, 1915: 3.9 inches
If Denver sees more than half a foot this week, the Pinpoint Weather team said it could possibly be the largest snowstorm this year, which currently sits with March 6, when it snowed 8.5 inches.
Denver would still need a good amount of snow to break the record amount of snow in May, but it will likely be among the top five if half a foot falls in Denver…
