Summit’s Jay McDonald sets new 4A state meet record with blazing win at track and field championships

The Summit High School track and field team came into its own on the second day of the Colorado state track and field championships at Jeffco Stadium in Lakewood.

Summit’s action began with the 3,200‑meter races Friday morning, May 15, the first track events of the day, head coach Mike Hagen wrote in an email. Summit’s Kayla Broecker started in the 4A girls race, which was followed by the 4A boys race with Lukas Remeikis.

Broecker started the race conservatively, running in ninth place for two laps. By the sixth lap Broecker had moved into fourth place, but her pace slowed somewhat as the warm and humid morning was beginning to wear on her, according to Hagen. Two runners were gaining on her, with another two close behind. One of the girls passed Broecker on the seventh lap, and another got onto her shoulder. Broecker dug deep and in the last 100 meters she re‑passed them to place fourth overall with a new personal record of 10:48.96 — 11 seconds better than her previous best.
