DENVER — Months after voters in and around South Broadway approved a self-imposed tax to create a new improvement district for maintenance, safety, and cleanup, along one of Denver’s busiest corridors, some longtime business owners say the public spaces outside their storefronts look worse than before.
The Broadway Denver General Improvement District, or GID, was approved by voters in November. It covers Broadway and the western side of Lincoln Street from 6th Avenue to Interstate 25, and a portion of Alameda Avenue.
Guoping Li owns AAMCO Transmissions on Alameda, a property in the Broadway GID boundaries. He said the maintenance he used to see outside his business has stopped since the new district took over.
“People ask me what’s going on in your front. I don’t know what to say,” Li said. “It’s kind of embarrassing, right? I mean, you see the weed grow almost two feet high, and no one cleans it.”…
