All four remaining Central Texas softball teams get bounced in UIL state semifinals

The high school season is over for Central Texas softball. The Austin-area’s four remaining teams all finished with bronze medals after falling in their state semifinal series over the weekend. Johnson (Class 6A Division I), Leader (5A DI), Liberty Hill (5A DII) and Wimberley (4A DII) each finished third in their respective brackets:

• Johnson shocked highly-regarded Pearland 6-4 in Game 1 of their 6A DI series, but then lost twice 9-1 and 9-2. The Jaguars started the season 12-10 but finished it 30-14, an 18-4 run. Johnson went 7-0 in the postseason, outscoring teams 88-26, before falling in the state semifinals. The regional championship came against the same San Antonio East Central team that had swept the Jaguars in two district meetings.

• Leander was swept by Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill, which is ranked No. 4 nationally and coached by former Hays coach Aaron Hays, who guided the Hawks to two state final four appearances. Barbers Hill had been ranked No. 1 in the country until a loss in a three-game series to LaPorte two weeks ago…
