H-E-B is growing its footprint with yet another massive store set for the Central Texas region, but bringing the project to life is still in the works. Unlike San Marcos, Buda shoppers will have to wait another two years to see a new H-E-B start to take shape off of Interstate 35.
The San Antonio-based grocery chain confirmed to MySA through email that it’s planning to begin construction on its upcoming Buda store near South Austin in 2028. Earlier this year, Buda officials announced that a long-vacant former landfill would be transformed into a new retail destination anchored by an H-E-B.
In the city’s March news release, officials noted that construction on the store, located along the southbound IH-35 access road north of Main Street in Buda, was expected to begin in 2026. However, because the store will be in a complex site that was formerly a landfill, environmental work is currently being done to clear the land before construction on the new H-E-B can officially begin, according to the company.
This was part of an agreement the City of Buda made with H-E-B where the company is investing in making environmental and roadway improvements to the area to ensure the site is safe and accessible.
