AUSTIN (KXAN) — More than 170 public and charter school campuses across Texas have closed — or are being considered for closure — since the 2023-24 school year, according to an analysis by the nonprofit Our Schools Our Democracy.
KXAN Investigates found many of the campuses facing closure were not failing according to the state’s accountability ratings, with more than 20 earning an A when they were approved to close.
In Austin, Widen Elementary is among 10 campuses closing because of declining enrollment and budget pressures. For families and teachers who have spent generations at these schools, the closures mean more than losing a building — they mean losing a community.
