A notoriously vacant tower will undergo a major facelift in downtown Austin. Google’s Sail Tower is set to receive a $25 million renovation, according to a new Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing.
Construction on the Austin project located at 601 W. 2nd St. is expected to begin on August 14, per the TDLR. This filing comes nearly a week after Google officially opened a new nonprofit community space within Sail Tower.
On Monday, August 3, Austin Mayor Kirk Watson, local community leaders and Google executives gathered at the tower office to celebrate the space designed to support local charities with a free, high-tech hub for innovation. The building’s ground-floor venue will offer eligible nonprofit organizations a place to host board meetings, workshops, classes and community events at no cost, according to a Google news release.
The Google.org venue can accommodate up to 143 people and includes high-speed Wi-Fi, audiovisual equipment, event supplies and more. The building is expected to boost the downtown economy after sitting mostly vacant overlooking Lady Bird Lake for nearly four years…
