‘Fabulous memories’: East Austin Mexican staple bids farewell after 16 years

A beloved Mexican eatery and Central Texas staple is closing for good next week after 16 years in business, owners announced.

Paco’s Tacos, a Mexican restaurant nestled in East Austin’s Mueller neighborhood, has been a community mainstay since it first opened back in 2010. Pulling from family recipes passed down across generations, the made-to-order restaurant serves up breakfast and lunch tacos, taco plates, gorditas, tostadas, tortas, quesadillas and dinner plates, among other menu offerings.

Its name pays tribute to Francisco Mercado Sanchez, or “Paco,” who was born in northern Mexico and relocated to what is today San Antonio. In 1812, he and his wife Cecelia opened their first restaurant — paving the way for the same recipes that today greet Austin customers…
