People have been cooking over flames ever since Prometheus stole fire from the gods. These days, that same fire feeds countless Texans gathering around the blazing pits of the barbecue world, creating a place to share stories, make memories and enjoy great food. One Texas-based company has taken that passion for fire to heart and has gone on to craft many of the pits behind Texas’ acclaimed barbecue joints.
Brothers Matt and Caleb Johnson have turned a passion for welding into a thriving business that has made them a key part of Texas’ barbecue renaissance. The pair moved to Lockhart in 2018 and established Mill Scale Metalworks after a decade of working in Austin, adding to the flavor collection that is the Barbecue Capital of Texas.
“We wanted to be a part of the future, and we wanted to contribute to the culture,” Matt Johnson said to MySA. “When you look at Lockhart, these guys have been cooking barbecue since the early 1900s, and they don’t really need to change anything, and a lot of them haven’t. So what we represent is this new school barbecue: offset, traditional offset smokers, low-and-slow cooking techniques. So we wanted to be a part of that culture, and they opened us with open arms.”…
