Cool trough will keep Kern County temps down into Sunday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — As we enter the final stretch of June 2026, the temperatures continue to go even lower. It’s not every year where highs top out in the 80s just days away from July across Kern County. From the South Valley to the desert Sunday afternoon temperatures may end up under 90 everywhere across our area.

This is because of a large and cool trough of low pressure that is effective at driving out the heat. In addition, the stronger pressure gradient is the reason for the recent increase in winds.

It does continue to look dry as any monsoonal moisture will be kept far away from our region due to the southwesterly to northwesterly flow coming in from the North Pacific. If a region of high pressure is able to establish and expand north and westward out of Mexico and the Central US that would signal the beginning of a monsoonal signal for our area.
