BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County Red Cross volunteers have been deployed to Guam to help after a natural disaster hit the territory.
Kern County residents Cindy Huge and George Manolakas traveled to Guam after Super Typhoon Bavi, a dangerous storm with wind gusts up to 180 mph, made its way to the island, marking the strongest storm to ever hit the island, according to the American Red Cross.

Huge is a longtime volunteer with the Kern County Red Cross and sits on the Kern County and Eastern Sierra Chapter’s board of directors.
Typhoon Bavi comes only months after Guam residents endured a different storm, Typhoon Sinlaku, that hit many of the same regions in April.
“Sinlaku left deep and lasting scars and Bavi arrived to find households still living in tents and others sheltering under temporary roofs – all directly exposed to Bavi’s devastation with none of the protection an intact home would provide,” Brad Kieserman, vice president of Disaster Operations and Logistics for the American Red Cross said in a statement…
