Arvin City Council to consider former Delano PD commander for police chief role

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A former Delano police commander could return to Kern County to become the next Arvin police chief, according to the Arvin City Council meeting agenda for Tuesday.

The Arvin City Council is set to consider Cecilio Velasco for the chief of police position, which has been vacant for almost a full year.

Velasco serves as chief of police for the city of Avenal in Kings County, where he was appointed to the role in February 2024. He has more than 21 years of law enforcement experience, according to the agenda.

Prior to serving as the Avenal police chief, Velasco served as commander and acting chief with the Delano Police Department. He was with the department for about 10 years and served as sergeant, detective and police officer, officials said…
