‘Flock cameras are not going away anytime soon’: Safety or privacy argument as L.A. ends Flock camera contract

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Safety or Privacy? Hundreds of license plate readers cover the streets of Bakersfield — ready to read and track vehicles suspected of involvement in crimes. The Los Angeles Police Department just canceled its contract to use these so-called Flock Cameras.

Police say the cameras help identify criminals quickly, but some members of the public say it’s an invasion of privacy. It’s a new way of virtual policing but, does the community value public safety, or privacy?

“License plate technology is something our department has used for well over a decade close to 10 or 15 years as it relates to auto theft,” said Bakersfield Police Chief Brent Stratton.
