‘You should just close’: Downtown Bakersfield businesses impacted by construction

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The sound of construction is something no one is eager to hear, but that sound has become a daily event for business owners in downtown Bakersfield.

More specifically, the sound is heard every day on 19th and 20th streets between O and Q streets. Soledad Baltazar opened her business in September, and since then, construction has not finished.

“My thing that I’ve been upset about, I think more than anything, is that we do have all different types of people that come in, especially our disabled,” said Baltazar, co-owner of Plants For Your Solie. “They haven’t been able to drive in, and it’s not fair for them to have to walk all the way down the street just to get here.”

With no signage announcing businesses are open, Baltazar has been hit hard.

“I’ve had people that drive around like, ‘We’ve driven around like four or five times,’” said Baltazar. “I’ve had people leave me messages [like], ‘You should just close because no one can even get to you.”
