What is a REAL ID?
A REAL ID is a federally accepted driver’s license or identification card. It can be used to board a domestic flight within the U.S. and enter secure federal facilities, such as military bases, federal courthouses, and other secure federal locations.
Is a REAL ID mandatory?
No, a REAL ID is optional. However, certain activities such as boarding domestic flights or entering federal buildings may be restricted.
Can I board a flight without a REAL ID?
A REAL ID or passport is required for all domestic and international flights effective May 7, 2025.
How long does it take to receive a REAL ID?
After an application is completed, the DMV said it takes about two weeks for the applicant to receive it through the U.S. Postal Service.
