Asking your child’s school about learning accommodations, equal access for kids with disabilities

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Many parents can feel overwhelmed when it comes to their children’s education, and the anxiety can become stronger when special needs come into the picture.

An IEP — or Individualized Education Plan — is a way for students to receive the guidance they need. They are thorough and may include, speech, one-on-one help and many other resources.

Another form of help is a 504 Plan that focuses more on accommodations, time for testing and other logistical tools the student may need.

To start the process, parents need to send a letter requesting their child be assessed in all academic areas including comprehension and in all behavioral areas if needed. This assessment determines if an IEP or a 504 Plan is needed…
