BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — An inmate already serving a life sentence for murdering a man in front of his young daughters in Malibu is now facing an additional 25 years to life in prison for attacking a state prison doctor in 2024, according to the Kern County District Attorney.
On May 14, 2026, a Kern County Jury convicted Anthony Rauda of one felony count of battery by an inmate on a non-inmate. Two days later, in a separate case, the same jury found it true that Rauda had served a prior term in state prison, that he had numerous criminal convictions, and that he had previously been convicted of one count of murder and three counts of attempted murder in Los Angeles County. His four past convictions qualify under the three-strikes law, making him eligible for an elevated sentence, said officials.
The incident dates back to September 11, 2024, when Rauda attacked a doctor at the prison after being evaluated for a medical accommodation, said prospectors. Rauda was told that he did not qualify for the prison’s criteria to be given the accommodation, which made him angry. The doctor then referred Rauda to the nurse’s station to avoid further contact with the inmate. When the doctor was walking back to his office, Rauda attacked the doctor and struck him in the back of the head, said the DA.
