Guinness Open Gate Brewery To Close In Maryland After Eight Years

HALETHORPE, Md. — For eight years, Marylanders have had a piece of Ireland just off Washington Boulevard — a place to celebrate birthdays over a pint, catch a band in the beer garden or bring visiting family for a brewery tour. That chance now comes with an expiration date, as Guinness Open Gate Brewery prepares to serve its final pint Sunday, Nov. 1.

After it closes, the Guinness Open Gate Brewery in Chicago will be the only Guinness brewery left in the United States, making the coming weeks the last opportunity for Maryland fans to make memories at a Guinness brewery close to home.

In a post on its official Facebook page, the brewery said it has welcomed more than 2 million visitors since opening in 2018 and thanked the people who visited, shared a meal or celebrated a milestone there. The post also recognized the brewery’s brewing and hospitality team and closed with an invitation: “For the next month, join us for one final toast. We’d love to see you before our last call.”

Why The Brewery Is Closing

Guinness brand owner Diageo announced the closure Oct. 1, ending the brewery’s run of more than eight years in the Baltimore area. Diageo said the decision followed a careful review of its operations and long-term business priorities…
