Jerome and Bridgette Johnson have been inspecting cars for more than 35 years at JJ’s Inspection on the corner of Plank Road and Glen Oaks Avenue. But their long-running family business has been slowing to a stop after Gov. Jeff Landry signed off on a bill to eliminate state vehicle safety inspections, saying the tag is inconvenient with little impact to safety.
The safety check will be replaced by a QR code that displays the vehicle identification number when scanned, costing $6 every time the vehicle’s registration is renewed. The Johnsons fear the move will make roads unsafe and drive up insurance costs due to higher risk.
