The missing Fort Bute marker has been found, but it won’t be reinstalled in time for America’s 250th anniversary on July 4.
“I would guess that it will be a month or two before we can get it back in the ground,” said Paul Bledsoe, secretary for the General Philemon Thomas Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. “There are a few things the Department of Transportation and Development have to figure out. They have to straighten out the pole and weld the cap on top.”
The local chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution partnered with the Baton Rouge Chapter Louisiana Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution to raise $4,000 for the creation and installment of the Louisiana State Historical marker commemorating the location of the British fort conquered by Bernardo de Galvez 1779.
Dedicated May 30
The marker was dedicated along River Road on May 30 at the East Baton Rouge-Iberville parish line in the southeastern most corner of the parish. This was 100 yards away from the fort’s actual location at the confluence of Bayou Manchac and the Mississippi River…
