On the one hand, one has to assume that East Baton Rouge Parish School Board member Patrick Martin is feeling the repercussions of failing to file his tax returns and subsequently throwing his wife under the bus for that error. Like Bill Clinton in 1998, I imagine Martin will be spending a bit of time sleeping on the couch.
But on the other hand, he is getting off scot-free. Regardless of who made the mistake, Martin clearly broke the rules and should be disqualified from running for the School Board. Why should he be treated any differently from Judge Steven Tureau, who similarly failed to file his taxes and was disqualified from the ballot by the Louisiana Supreme Court?
It is especially poignant that a School Board member, of all people, should be able to weasel his way out of consequences for failing to follow the rules…
