ZACHARY, La. (WAFB) – A union representing school bus drivers has filed a workplace safety complaint with OSHA over reports of broken air conditioning units and equipment failures on buses operated by contractor First Student in the Zachary Community School District.
Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1546, which represents most of Baton Rouge’s bus transit systems, says drivers have reported students becoming sweaty, hot and fatigued on their routes.
Union cites reports of student distress
George DeCuir Jr., president and business agent of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1546, said drivers have relayed accounts of students contacting their parents from buses.
“We’ve actually had reports from drivers that kids have contacted their parents on the bus, advising that they are sweating, they are hot, they are fatigued, that may possibly lead to health issues,” DeCuir said…
