SEATTLE — Efforts to address homelessness are having varying results throughout downtown Seattle, with some streets cleared of tents while other encampments remain, including one in the Chinatown-International District, where a woman was shot on Friday.
City officials are trying to respond to multiple concerns as Seattle plays host city for the FIFA World Cup games, which kicked off locally on June 15 and is expected to draw hundreds of thousands of visitors. The city is trying to both clear away encampments that are obstructing public sidewalks or creating public safety concerns, while at the same time providing meaningful intervention for individuals struggling on the streets.
Seattle police said they were called to the 1000 block of South Main Street, where a woman was found with a gunshot wound near a small collection of tents. Medics rushed the 37-year-old to the hospital in stable condition, while the Guardian 1 helicopter and a K-9 team joined officers to search for the shooting suspect.
