Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson wants more government cameras watching drivers and new authority to ban right turns on red, even after ordering crime-fighting CCTV cameras in Seattle’s Stadium District turned off, the latest escalation in City Hall’s war on cars.
Wilson’s Aug. 21 executive order directs her administration to lobby the Washington Legislature to give local governments authority to implement “No Right on Red” policies on city streets. The order does not immediately ban right turns on red or specify whether Wilson would ultimately seek a citywide prohibition. But it would give Seattle another tool to restrict motorists at intersections, building on a policy the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has already been expanding.
The proposal is part of a sweeping executive order that begins by criticizing America and Seattle for operating under a transportation system “built for high-speed driving and high volumes of cars in urban areas.” Wilson declares that redesigning streets to make walking, biking and transit “a safer and more attractive option” is a priority of her administration…
