The 55th Northwest Folklife Festival returns to Seattle Center this May, running for four days from Friday, May 22 through Monday, May 25. Since its origins in the 1970s, the festival has invited attendees to explore new music, sample diverse foods, try different dance styles, and engage with the many cultures that shape the Pacific Northwest. This year’s theme, Ubuntu—an African philosophy captured in the phrase “I am because we are”—centers on shared humanity and collective connection.
There’s no shortage of things to do. Visitors can expect music and dance performances across multiple stages, a wide array of food vendors, and family-friendly, hands-on activities. In recent years, the festival has expanded with new features, including Threads of the People, which blends runway shows, workshops, demos, vendor booths, displays, and material swaps. The Maker’s Space highlights craft showcases and interactive demonstrations, while the Window Gallery reflects a broader effort to incorporate more visual arts into the event.
Festival hours are:
- Friday: 12 PM – 10 PM
- Saturday: 12 PM – 9 PM
- Sunday: 12 PM – 9 PM
- Monday: 12 AM – 7 PM
Admission remains free to ensure accessibility for all, though organizers encourage a suggested daily donation of $20 per person. Contributions of any size are welcomed and help sustain the festival. As organizers note, the event is “not easy to sustain,” and only about 17% of attendees donate: “This is not enough to produce and sustain an event of this caliber.” So if you attend this year, be sure to contribute what you can!…
