The ferry ride from Seattle to Vashon Island only takes about 20 minutes. But for many people who live there, it feels like a world away.
Roughly 11,000 residents share the island — a place where farmers, tech CEOs, artists and longtime locals all seem to exist in the same orbit. It’s the kind of place where you might stand in line next to a baker, a biologist, or even a Grammy-nominated musician.
“There is something magical about this little island,” Isaac Slade said. “Vashon has sort of a strange rare mix of city people living in a rural setting with lots of rural people living right up next to the city. And it’s a 21-minute boat ride to Pike Place.”
“We just have this cool mix, and I think because everybody is equal, we’re all just a bunch of people trying to keep it small and meaningful, there’s not a lot of ego,” he added with a laugh. “Like, I’ll tell people who I am or who I was, because they’ll ask. And they’ll be like cool, that’s sweet. I’m a baker.”…
