GARDENDALE, Ala. (WBRC) – Low-hanging utility wires at the entrance to a local carport and building business in Jefferson County have created safety hazards for truck drivers and motorists for months, with four utility companies each denying ownership of the problem wire.
A fix is now in the works after Alabama Power agreed to install a new pole.
Eight months, four companies, no answers
Richard Loyd, who took over R&J Buildings and Carports in October 2025, said the wires at his driveway entrance have not been high enough to allow large buildings to pass through safely since he took ownership.
“The lot has been here now for two years and they’ve had constant troubles with it, the lines are too low,” Loyd said.
Several times a day, trucks haul buildings on and off the property. Some structures measure 16 by 40 feet, and the wires sit too low for the loads to pass through without risk…
