A new business is raising hopes in a struggling Alabama town for the first time in years

A trucking company that now fills the vacant commercial space off a busy Tarrant highway could be the beginning of a new era of business development for the small city just east of Birmingham, its mayor said.

Tarrant Mayor Tracie Threadford said the recent opening of Second Mile Transport shows that the city of about 6,000 can successfully compete for businesses and provide the needed infrastructure for their success.

“It is a major step toward revitalizing our city,” she said. “We’ve got them as an anchor business.”…
