The Carver Jones Market opened today in the former Save a Lot location at 833 Dennison Ave. Southwest, in the Heritage Park Town Center, in a Birmingham neighborhood which has been considered a ‘food desert’ since Save a Lot closed in 2023.
The city helped fund a renovation of the building with $885,000 in incentives, including $600,000 allocated from American Rescue Plan Act funds designated for healthy food, and the remainder in sales tax abatement.
Birmingham City Council member Crystal Smitherman, whose family has lived down the street from this shopping center for decades, said not having enough access to healthy food is the number one issue for her constituents…
