US-31 nightly lane closures hit Homewood, Vestavia through 2027

For the next nine months, if you are traveling south from downtown Birmingham on US-31 into Homewood or north from Vestavia through Homewood on 31, be prepared for possible nightly lane closures.

2.4 mile stretch of US-31 through Homewood

This week, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) announced it has begun work on a 2.4 mile stretch of the Old Montgomery Highway starting at the intersection of Merchants Walk and Ventura Avenue in Homewood and ending at Shades Crest Road in Vestavia Hills.

Work on the roadway will be done daily at night and early morning between 7PM to 6AM.

The initial portion of the road project will start at the Homewood Ventura and 28th Street entrance, where they will conduct the following work:

  • Concrete work in the median
  • Grading + base work for any new widened areas
  • Continued traffic signal improvement
  • Resurfacing on US-31 from Shades Crest Road to Ventura Avenue

Resurfacing is expected to be done near the end of the project. According to ALDOT, the contractor is expected to finish the project in June 2027…
