Birmingham family fights for specialized rehab after denials by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama

Calvin “Elijah” Briggs Jr. was building a career around telling stories.

The 23-year-old Birmingham-area native graduated from Clark Atlanta University earlier this year with a degree in film. He also worked as a docent at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

His goal was to use animation to make Birmingham’s history and the Civil Rights Movement accessible to people who might not otherwise engage with it.

His mother, Samantha Briggs, described him simply as “light.”…
