Central Alabama Water backs billing change that could raise bills for 90% of customers

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — Nearly 90% of Central Alabama Water’s residential customers could pay more for water in 2027 after the utility’s board voted Friday to move forward with a new billing structure that would eliminate its current three-tier pricing system.

The decision comes as the utility continues working to stabilize its finances following significant layoffs, budget cuts and restructuring earlier this year.

Under the proposed structure, customers would pay the same rate for every gallon of water they use, rather than paying progressively higher rates as their consumption increases…
