Three-day lapse before man found dead at Birmingham shelter raises oversight questions

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — The ABC 33/40 I-Team is investigating how a man went unchecked for three days inside a Birmingham emergency shelter before he was found dead, and why questions about that death are now raising concerns about oversight and accountability at facilities serving some of Alabama’s most vulnerable residents.

The death happened at the Way Station Emergency Shelter in Birmingham, a 20-bed overnight facility operated by AIDS Alabama for unhoused adults living with HIV.

According to a report provided by the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office, surveillance video showed the man entering his room and locking the door around 6 a.m. on November 23, 2025.
