Short-Lived Paddle: Florida Man Nabbed At Gas Station After Islamorada Kayak Theft

MONROE COUNTY, Fla. – A 34-year-old Delray Beach man is behind bars after allegedly stealing a kayak from an Islamorada home and trying to paddle away through the mangroves. William Mathew Hallowell was arrested on June 26, 2026, and faces charges of burglary and theft.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received a trespassing report at around 8:36 a.m. at a residence located on the 79000 block of the Overseas Highway. A witness told deputies they saw Hallowell take a kayak from the property’s beach area and paddle it into the nearby mangroves.

Witnesses later confronted Hallowell at a dock along the driveway. Following the encounter, Hallowell abandoned the kayak and drove away from the scene in a Toyota sedan…
