Free Karen Read movement calls for government accountability

BOSTON (WWLP) – Demonstrators gathered on the State House steps Thursday morning to call for state leadership accountability with regard to the Karen Read trial.

Read, who is accused of running over her Boston police boyfriend with her SUV and leaving him for dead, is the defendant in a highly televised murder trial that ended in a hung jury.

Many protestors say they believe she is innocent and was framed by the Canton Police and Massachusetts State Police. This standout comes after the announcement that a special prosecutor–the former lawyer of infamous criminal Whitey Bulger–will be the lead prosecutor on Read’s second trial.

Aiden Kearney, better known online as Turtleboy, spoke against this special prosecutor at the demonstration. “Congratulations Michael Morrisey, you have handed over your office to the mob. Well done, well done,” said Kearney. “The people who are supposed to protect us from this have handed it over to the mob.”

Protestors also spoke about the other high-profile cases, like the murder of Sandra Birchmore, for which a former Stoughton police office has been charged. This case is also being handled by the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office.
