Industrial accident forces 71 layoffs at Mass. metal company

A Woburn-based company that specializes in sustainable metal production is preparing to lay off 71 people after an “unforeseen industrial accident” at a Brazilian manufacturing facility.

Boston Metal will cut jobs at its three Woburn locations on March 14, according to a Massachusetts Workers Adjustment Retraining Notice filed with the state on Feb. 20.

In a letter to the state Department of Career Services, Boston Metal did not specify what occurred during the Jan. 30 accident but wrote that it resulted in “a critical equipment failure and an immediate halt to industrial operations.”…
