Davis Square ‘Edged Weapon’ Attack Locks Down Holland Street

An early-morning assault rattled Davis Square on Thursday after a person was attacked with what police described as an “edged weapon” near the MBTA station. The victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening, while officers shut down Holland Street to collect evidence and keep traffic out of the area. As of mid-morning, no arrests had been reported.

According to The Boston Globe, Somerville police said the victim was being treated at a nearby hospital and that investigators remained at the scene. The Globe reported that officers restricted access to parts of the square as detectives documented and processed evidence.

Scene and response

“The Somerville Police are actively investigating an assault with an edged weapon that occurred this morning,” police spokesperson Grace Munns wrote in an email, as reported by The Boston Globe. Officers blocked off Holland Street and roughly a dozen cruisers clustered near the Davis Square MBTA entrance while detectives combed the area.

Local context

The Davis Square and Tufts-area corridor has been on the city’s radar before. The City of Somerville previously issued neighborhood safety alerts after a series of late-night robberies, and local crime logs reviewed by The Somerville News Weekly show multiple recent assaults in the same general area. Residents and business owners say those incidents have led to periodic bumps in police patrols and outreach from city officials.
