“This was no accident”: Memorial Drive shooting raises explosive questions about psych hospital release policies

The Memorial Drive shooting in Cambridge is being described by some as a shocking act of random violence, but YouTuber and Massachusetts commentator Mike Urban says that explanation is far too simple for what happened.

In a recent video, Urban argued that the case of Tyler Brown should be viewed as a breakdown across several public systems, including the courts, parole supervision and psychiatric discharge procedures. Brown, who allegedly opened fire on random drivers on Memorial Drive on May 11, had reportedly been released from McLean Hospital just three days earlier.

Urban’s central argument is not that one agency alone caused the shooting, but that too many agencies appear to have operated separately around a man with a violent history, serious mental health issues and active supervision by the criminal justice system.

Urban said he does not believe the Memorial Drive attack should be dismissed as merely a “random act of violence by a lunatic,” because Brown’s background, recent treatment and release timeline raise larger concerns about how Massachusetts handles high-risk individuals…
