A disturbing video has gone viral, capturing the moment a security guard used a high-voltage Taser on a customer’s face at close range outside a busy California venue.
The incident occurred just before 8:30 p.m. outside Park 101, a popular rooftop sports bar and restaurant located in Carlsbad Village, North County San Diego. The venue was packed with patrons attending a well-attended World Cup watch party.
The graphic footage shows a shirtless man standing just inches from a security guard wearing tactical gear. Suddenly and without any visible provocation, the guard raises a stun gun, aims it directly at the man’s head, and fires. The victim immediately falls to the concrete sidewalk, clearly in pain, while a bystander rushes to his aid.
The video then cuts to the guard being handcuffed and escorted away by police officers who had arrived on the scene.
Authorities have identified the suspect as 42-year-old David Marquez from San Marcos. The Carlsbad Police Department confirmed that Marquez was arrested at the scene and booked into Vista County Jail. He faces two felony charges: assault with a deadly weapon and assault with a stun gun.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, treated the victim at the scene before transporting him to a nearby trauma center. To protect his privacy, the police and medical staff have not released his identity. While medical experts note that being shocked by a Taser at such close range to the head can cause serious brain injuries, facial fractures, and eye damage, the extent of the victim’s injuries has not been disclosed.
Park 101’s management quickly condemned the incident. Co-owner Pete Chich called the guard’s actions “deeply disturbing” and made clear that the security staff had been hired from a third-party company specifically to handle the large crowd of soccer fans. Chich confirmed that Marquez has been fired and that the venue has cut all ties with the security firm.
Local detectives are actively investigating the circumstances that led to the confrontation and what prompted the verbal exchange before the Taser was deployed.
